The visit

What a tune-up actually includes

“Tune-up” covers a wide range of things in this trade, from a genuine hour of work to a filter change and a sticker. This is what ours involves, so you can compare like for like.

  1. Refrigerant charge verified against superheat and subcooling, not guessed from a gauge reading. Charge drifts, and a system running even slightly low loses efficiency long before it stops cooling.
  2. Electrical tested under load — capacitors measured against rated capacity, contactor points inspected, amp draw on the compressor and fan motors. A weak capacitor is the cheapest part to replace before it fails and the most expensive to ignore.
  3. Coils inspected and cleaned as needed. A fouled condenser coil is the most common cause of a system that works but costs more every year.
  4. Condensate drain cleared and the safety switch tested. This is the one that stops a blocked line becoming a ceiling repair.
  5. Airflow and temperature split measured across the coil, which is what tells you whether the system is performing to its rating or just running.
  6. Safety checks — on gas equipment the heat exchanger, flame sensor and combustion, which is the part that is about safety rather than efficiency.

You get the readings, not just a clean bill of health. If something is drifting we will show you the number and let you decide.

Timing

Why twice a year rather than once

A heat pump runs in both seasons, so it accumulates roughly twice the hours of a system that only cools. Even with a gas furnace, the two halves of the system fail in different ways and need checking at different times.

The point of the timing is to find problems in the shoulder season rather than in the middle of a heatwave. A capacitor that measures weak in April is a scheduled visit. The same capacitor failing in July is an emergency call at the exact moment every HVAC company in the Triangle is fully booked.

Spring for the cooling side, autumn for the heating side. That is the whole logic.

Warranty

Your warranty probably requires it

Most manufacturer warranties on HVAC equipment require documented annual professional maintenance. It is in the paperwork and it is enforced — a compressor claim on a system with no service history is a claim that often gets refused.

If your system is still inside its warranty period, the tune-up is protecting a five-figure asset for a two-figure price. We keep the service records, so if you ever need to make a claim the documentation exists.

Cost

Tune-ups and membership

One-off visits or an annual membership. The membership is priced below two separate visits and adds priority dispatch, which is worth more than it sounds in the first week of a heatwave.

RepairTypical range
Single AC tune-up (spring)$129–$179
Single heating tune-up (fall)$139–$189
Annual maintenance membership (2 visits)$189–$249/yr
Premium membership (2 visits + 20% off repairs)$249–$329/yr
Multi-system membership (2 ACs + 2 heaters)$349–$499/yr

The AC tune-up is currently running at $79 against a regular price of $129–$179.

Questions

HVAC Maintenance, answered

The AC tune-up is currently $79, against a regular price of $129–$179. Heating tune-ups run $139–$189, and annual memberships covering both visits start at $189/yr.

It costs less than booking the two visits separately, and it puts you ahead of the queue in peak season. If you only ever call when something breaks, the plan mostly pays for itself the first time you need someone in July.

Twice a year — the cooling side in spring, the heating side in autumn. A heat pump runs year-round, so it benefits most.

The mechanism is not mysterious: charge drift, fouled coils and weak capacitors all make the compressor work harder, and the compressor is the expensive part. Catching those keeps the system inside its design envelope.

Most manufacturer warranties require documented annual professional service. Skipping it gives the manufacturer grounds to decline a claim, which matters most on exactly the failures you would want covered.

You get the reading and a written price, and you decide. A tune-up is not a pretext for a sales call — plenty of them end with nothing needing doing.
